As Christmas starts to seem a distant memory we look forward to 2012 in the garden. January is a great time to take stock and make plans for the year. The ground is often frozen during this month so spend time indoors studying seed catalogues for your favourite plants and particularly new ones to grow for the coming year.

Seed sowing saves the gardener an enormous amount of money especially during the main planting seasons of spring and summer. Growing from seed not only saves money but it is very rewarding watching those little seedlings grow into mature plants. It gives the gardener a real sense of achievement.

It is very easy to start growing from seed. All that is needed is a seed tray or pot. If you are lucky enough to have a propagator then this will enable you to grow much more variety of seed with greater success. Along with the container you will need seed compost, labels, clear plastic bags, a well-lit place and a sense of adventure!

Initially choose seed that is easy to grow. Hardy or half-hardy annuals are often the best seeds to start with. The instructions are written on the back of the seed packet and should always be followed.

Choose seeds that can be sown in succession so that sowing can continue until April. Make a plan and keep a record of the dates of sowing so that you can use this as a guide next year.

When the first shoots come through the compost this is called 'germination'.

It is essential for successful seed growing that the equipment and surrounding area are clean. Always wash everything especially containers in hot water if they have been used before and always use fresh compost, never garden soil.

If you cannot sow the seed straight away keep the packets in a cool dry place. Keep the seed in an airtight box in the fridge with a sachet of silicone gel in with the seed until ready for sowing.

Most seeds are very simple to sow however some have to have other preparations done to them to make them germinate.

Some seeds have a hard coating around them that needs to be broken before they will germinate. They can either be soaked overnight in warm water, chipped with a knife or rubbed with a file. This action is called 'breaking the dormancy' of the seed.

Some seeds need a period of chilling before they will germinate. This is known as 'stratification' and is done by covering the seed and placing the pots against a north-facing wall in winter or more often than not in the refrigerator.

Seeds also come in a variety of sizes. Some are as small as dust and need to be mixed with silver sand to ensure spacious sowing while others are large and can be placed at the best distances apart.

Whatever the seed choice it will be great when those little seeds become plants and start to flower. If your head is spinning with which choice of seed to grow then you can always go out in the garden if it is not frozen and work off those excess pounds gained over Christmas!

As the days shorten and the temperature dips there is no better workout than a few hours outside in the fresh air. Supplement this with warming drinks and home-made soup and bread for lunch and the 'world is your oyster!'

Do not think of those falling leaves as a chore, think of them as a gift from the sky. They are such a valuable resource for the garden, full of natural goodness. Look at the various ways you could use those leaves to improve your garden.

Compost

If you make your own compost then autumn leaves make a great additon to the pile. Chop or shred them first using a shredder or run over them with the lawn mower to chop them into your collection bag. Some leaf blowers actually suck up the leaves and shred them all in one action. If you have many trees in the garden then it may pay to buy one of these. Using autumnal leaves adds high-carbon content to the compost heap. Layer them like a lasagne, one layer of leaves then a layer of green waste such as vegetable peelings and grass clippings. Repeat this process and then leave over the winter to decompose. If you feel like some exercise the compost heap will benefit from a turn over during winter to aerate it. By next spring it should be the perfect medium for adding to your garden.

Make leaf mould

This is my favourite use of decaying leaves which can be added to the soil and potting composts to provide body. If you think about it is natures' way of improving the condition of the soil. You only have to look at the texture of the soil around trees in a forest. The soil looks good and smells so fresh. There are a couple of ways to make leaf mould in the garden which keeps everything neat.
The first is to construct a leaf-mould bin. Take four tree stakes or other pieces of wood and hammer them securely into the ground forming a square or rectangle.

Then roll out some galvanised chicken wire around the outside of the stakes. Pull tightly and secure with staples. Finally make sure that you snip off any loose pieces of wire or turn over any sharp ends. Your leaf-bin is then ready to use. Simply layer your leaves in the bin and on occasion add a thin layer of soil to it. I usually use the old compost out of my hanging baskets and other containers. After a year it will be a perfect addition to your soil.

If you do not have the space for a leaf-mould bin then you can quite simply use black bin bags or as I have used in the past old compost bags turned inside out so that the black lining is on the exterior to attract extra heat. Whichever you use make holes in the sides and underneath to let in air. Start to fill with the fallen leaves. It may pay to sprinkle a little water on in half way up the bag or when finished. you want to add a little water but not too much as to make it soggy. This comes with trial and error over the years and of course depends on the size of the bags you are using. Once finished tie up the bags securely and leave them in a shady place in the garden. After a year it should resemble a crumbly soil addition full of goodness. Leave it another year and it will make a good addition to seed sowing and potting mixes.

Mulch
If you do not have much time but want to use the leaves then quite simply cut them up through a lawn mower and layer them around the bases of shrubs and other plants in the garden. This mulch needs to be at least 10cm thick to be of benefit. Make sure that you do not put it touching the stems of plants as this can cause the plant to rot.
This leaf mulch will help the soil retain moisture and keep weed-seedlings at bay next spring. As an extra bonus the leaves will be taken down into the soil by the worms and other insects.
Once there they will digest them and then deposit the nutrients into the eco-system of the soil which over time will create a light and fluffy soil.

So when you see those leaves falling don't think of it as a negative factor.
Be positive and use them and you will find that your garden and the gardener will be better for it in the future.
<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

still be some damaged or diseased bulbs that will escape the checking process.
Check the bulbs you choose carefully making sure that there is no bruising or
holes in them which may be harbouring disease or insects. They should be firm
to touch. Tulip bulbs should ideally have their tunics (skin) on them. By
paying attention to flowering times you can have a continuous display from
February through to May so get out there and take advantage of the beautiful autumn

A garden that we have developed for a client was opened for charity a coupld of weeks ago by Mr. Turner the owner.

The weather was fine and many people enjoyed visiting the garden which was in full flower. The garden contains many roses along with an extensive variety of herbaceous perennials. There were two plants that caused the most attention.

The first was the giant foxtail lilies (Eremurus Robustus) which towered above the borders despite growing completely in the wrong conditions. The second plant of interest was another bulb. Allium christophii, with its star clustered flowerhead emerging from the herbaceous underplanting.

Combined with tea and delicious cake (including my favourite, carrot cake!) the totals raised was:

￡1,684.15 for Support Dogs
￡1,571.33 for Help for Heroes and
￡1,550.00 for the Ropsley village Church
totalling ￡4,805.48 over the course of the weekend.

Mr Turner says huge thank you to everyone that helped in so many ways and also to those that donated and attended.

In our part of the country we have had very little rain which has caused the farmers big problems
with their crops. To gardeners however this dry warm weather has seen an early start to the summer flowering season with roses starting to bloom in the middle of May. Generally the plants that usually flower in mid June are
starting to flower now. As you see from the photographs we have some roses in full bloom in the garden 3 to 4 weeks earlier than usual. While this is great to see it makes you wonder if the plants will run out of energy if
the warm, dry conditions stay for the summer. All this is part of learning. Professionals and amateurs alike are all experiencing new territory as the winter killed or damaged so many plants that we thought were strong. Ivy
and pyracanthas died and many shrubs in our garden were either hit with the snow or frost. But all is not bad as these extreme weather conditions at least force the gardener into making changes in the garden and introduce
new plants to replace the ones lost. It is nature's way of refreshing the area.

Let us know the extreme gardening conditions that you are experiencing in your own garden.

Japanese Earthquake & Tsunami.
